DDW 22: A visit to the Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building 

Visitors to Dutch Design Week (DDW) 2021 could not ignore it at the time. In the middle of the Ketelhuisplein in Eindhoven was "The Exploded View Beyond Building. An exhibition in the form of a modular wooden house, created by Biobased Creations. During DDW 2022, visitors we see a scale model of the life-size house created by them in the 'Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building'. Much of the expo was made of Ecoplex. Because of durability, consistent quality and fine layer construction, this is a logical choice for the designers and makers.

DDW 2022 - The Nature Building Kit

Because of the high demand for the house and because the Exploded View Beyond Building can only be in one place at a time, the 1:10 scale model "The Nature Building Kit" was developed. The materials in this interactive and modular scale model can be taken out or moved as desired. Last summer, 5 similar scale models with 30 biobased materials were on display at the NEMO Science Museum. Here the future generation was already eagerly and sustainably building. 

Ruben Bus (Project Manager/ Designer Biobased Creations): "The scale model is easy to take along during workshops. Soon we will also approach training institutes with this. The participants can then directly see, feel and build with the materials. All materials are biobased and made from plants, fungi, waste purification or food, for example."

Test results and action!

In the middle of the expo is a large partition made of Ecoplex. On it we see a program by TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Natural Science Research) on Emission-free Building. Nine materials from 'The Exploded View Beyond Building' were tested on fire class, strength class and their contribution to CO2 and nitrogen reduction. As a result of this TNO Fieldlab, an agenda with six action points was drawn up to make the transition to a sustainable building system. 

Possible Landscapes

The section behind the partition is dedicated to "Possible Landscapes. A multi-year program in which stakeholders and knowledge partners search for possibilities for a sustainable society. Builders, producers, scientists, farmers, designers and nature experts took place at the round 'conversation table'. During co-creation sessions they came up with possible new landscapes for De Peel. With stories and imagination, those perspectives were transformed into model installations. These are used in the region as a conversation starter about what is possible now, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. In the coming years, several other locations in the Netherlands will be explored.

Ecoplex - the good example

Biosbased Creations used Ecoplex as the basis for most of the components in the expo. Besides its constructive purpose, Ecoplex sets a good example for many start-ups. The sustainable board material is already widely available within the construction and interior design industry. It obtains its durability because the basic material, the poplar, grows very fast. In addition, there is a short distance from the tree to the factory and optimum use is made of the tree's youthful growth. After harvesting, new trees are planted immediately, thus offsetting part of the CO2 emissions.
